You want a US salary band, or at least a US startup’s pace and scope, without leaving India. The listings say “remote”, you apply, and nothing comes back. Often the reason is in small print you skimmed: the role was remote within the United States.

So the job here is narrower than “find remote startup jobs”. It is: find the US startups that can actually pay someone in India, and get in front of them.

Do US startups hire remote from India?

Yes, through one of three setups. Which one a company uses decides whether it can hire you at all, so it is worth knowing before you apply.

Remote, which sells employment services, puts the rule plainly: “Companies hiring in India are typically required to either own a local legal entity or work with a global employment platform like Remote that can legally provide employment services in the country.” Rippling’s guide adds the cheaper first step: foreign employers “can start by hiring Indian contractors and sending international payments”, but full-time employees need an entity or an employer of record (EOR).

Three ways a US startup can pay someone in India, and what each means for you
SetupWho employs youWhat it means for youSignal on a listing
ContractorNobody; you invoice the startupFastest to start. You handle your own taxes, and there are no employer contributions such as EPF. Ask a CA how your income is taxed.“Contract”, “contractor”, an hourly or monthly rate
Employer of record (EOR)An EOR firm in India, on the startup’s behalfIndian payroll and contributions such as EPF, handled by the EOR. The startup needs no Indian company.Rupee pay band, “India” or “Remote (IN)” in the location
Indian entityThe startup’s own Indian subsidiaryA normal Indian employment contract with the startup’s Indian company. An Indian office city, or a careers page with India roles

Rippling’s guide says an EOR “operates as the employer on your company’s behalf, so you don’t need your own entity”, and that it covers statutory contributions to EPF and ESI. It also notes that “Registering a legal entity can take months”. Remote warns that “Misclassification of contractors in India may lead to fines and penalties for the offending company”, so some startups prefer an EOR even for one person.

The entity route shows up in funding news. Inc42 reported on 14 October 2026 that Parallel Loop, which raised $6.6 million, is a “US-headquartered startup” that “has an entity in Bengaluru, with 85-90% of its workforce based in India”. A US company built like that is hiring in India by design.

For you, the practical point is that you can offer to work as a contractor or through an EOR the company already uses. That answers one of the first questions a small US startup will have.

Which US startups are hiring remote from India right now?

These had live roles open to someone in India when we checked on 14 October 2026. Hiring changes weekly, so treat this as a sample and check each page yourself.

US startups with roles open to people in India, checked 14 October 2026

WarpBuild’s network engineer posting says “Remote work from anywhere in India” and “US citizenship/visa not required”, which is as clear as these get. Oscilar posted to Hacker News’ October thread with “REMOTE (US/Canada/Brazil/Poland/UK/India)”, and its job board listed the India backend role as published on 25 September 2026.

We left out listings that looked open to India but were not, or not clearly. They are the useful part of this page, so the next section is about them.

Why do most “remote” startup jobs exclude India?

Because “remote” on a US listing usually means remote within the US. The numbers we counted on 14 October 2026:

  • YC’s remote software engineer page showed 27 roles. 17 were marked “Remote (US)”; 2 named India (WarpBuild, and a Bengaluru-based YC company’s internship), and 3 said “Remote” without naming a country.
  • YC’s India jobs page showed 25 roles, and 10 of them were marked only “Remote (US)”. Being listed on the India page did not mean a role was open to people in India.
  • Wellfound’s remote page showed “11979 results total”. On its first page, 25 roles were tagged remote in the United States (“Remote • United States” or “Remote only • United States”) and one was “Remote only • Everywhere”.
  • Wellfound’s India page showed “5406 results total”. Its first page had 7 roles tagged “Remote only • Everywhere” and 3 tagged “Remote only • India”.

US companies often restrict remote roles to the US for the payroll reasons above. Hacker News’ hiring thread builds the habit into its posting rules, which ask companies to write REMOTE (US) or similar when remote work is limited to one country. By our count, 147 of the 263 top-level posts in the October 2026 thread mentioned remote work, and only a handful mentioned India.

How do you filter for roles that are actually open to India?

Read each listing for these signals, in this order. One failed check usually ends it.

  1. The location line. “Remote (IN)”, “Remote - India”, “Remote only • India” and “Everywhere” are yes. “Remote (US)”, “Remote • United States” and “Remote (US; CA)” are no, whatever the page title says.
  2. The visa line on YC listings. “US citizenship/visa not required” is a good sign. “US citizen/visa only” means a US work permit is required.
  3. The title against the tags. LiteLLM’s “Forward Deployed Engineer - India” was tagged “Remote (US)” and “US citizen/visa only”, and its benefits mention a “401k plan with 3.5% match”, a US retirement plan. When the title and the tags disagree, ask before applying.
  4. Contract terms. Retell AI’s telephony role offers “Full-Time or Part-Time 1099 Contractor” work, also marked “US citizen/visa only”. A 1099 is a US tax form, so this is a US contractor role.
  5. Currency and time zone. A rupee pay band, or a phrase like “India time zones”, tells you the company has already worked out how to pay and manage someone here.

Where do US startups post roles open to India?

Start with the sources where location lines are reliable, and search them for India explicitly.

  • YC’s role pages. ycombinator.com/jobs/role/software-engineer/remote, and the same path for other roles, list every remote YC role with a location line and visa line. Scan for “IN”.
  • Wellfound. The India page mixes office and remote roles; look for “Remote only • India” and “Remote only • Everywhere”.
  • Hacker News “Who is hiring?”. Posted at the start of each month. Search the page for “India”. October 2026’s thread included Oscilar and SingleStore, which posted “Full Time, Remote India”.
  • Careers pages on Ashby, Greenhouse and Lever. Many US startups’ job boards list “Remote - India” as a location, as Oscilar’s does.
  • Funding news. A US startup that announces an Indian entity or an India team, like Parallel Loop, is a candidate even before it posts.

For a side-by-side of the boards themselves, see the remote startup job sites compared.

Should you write to US founders instead of waiting for a posting?

Often, yes. At a ten-person US startup, the founder decides whether to hire someone in India, and a posted “Remote (US)” role is sometimes a default rather than a rule. A short note that answers the obvious questions (time-zone overlap, contractor or EOR, what you have shipped) gives them a reason to make an exception, or to tell you about a role that is not posted.

Backdoor is built for that route, and two parts of it fit this search:

  • A free YC list with locations. Backdoor’s free sheet lists 200 YC startups with open roles, which it says were checked on 7 October 2026, with “the roles, location, work setup, pay where the posting gives it, the founders, the careers link and a public contact email” (Backdoor says). The preview rows on that page include San Francisco, London and “Remote (US)” locations. Filter by location and work setup, and you have a shortlist of remote-friendly startups with a founder to write to, in minutes.
  • Founder emails you approve. Each morning it surfaces startups with fresh news (new funding, a launch, a hiring push) and prepares a founder email for each: the address looked up, and a draft on why you fit. You edit and approve every draft before it leaves your Gmail, and its follow-ups stay in that thread.

One honest limit: Backdoor’s pages describe no remote or country filter that we could find. Its sample chat shows someone asking for “early stage, remote pls”, but we found no statement on how that preference is applied. So put your location and working hours in every draft yourself. The outreach is the paid part; in India that is ₹999 for a 7-day pass, paid once, while outside India it is a subscription, a USD $1 trial that renews at USD $29 a month or $59 a quarter unless you cancel.

If you would rather write to US founders than wait for a remote-India posting, see how Backdoor works.

YC Work at a Startup is worth a profile either way: YC says founders reach out to candidates from it, so say in your profile where you are and how you can be paid. On Wellfound, most roles show salary, equity and a location tag on the listing itself, which makes the filtering above quick.

What should a note to a US founder say?

Illustrative example written for this page: a note to a US seed-stage founder from a backend engineer in Pune. It is not a real message or a real user's result.

Subject: Backend help from India, 4 hours of PT overlap

Hi Rachel,

Saw your seed round and the new usage-based billing launch. I’m a backend engineer in Pune; for the last three years I’ve built billing and metering services in Go and Postgres, most recently cutting invoice generation time from minutes to seconds at a 30-person SaaS company.

I work remotely and can overlap with Pacific time until noon your time every weekday. I’m happy to start as a contractor, or through an EOR if you already use one.

Could we find 20 minutes next week? If you’d rather read than talk, I can first write up how I’d approach metering at your volume.

Thanks, Siddharth

The note answers the three questions a US founder has before they ask: can you do the work, will you be awake when we are, and can we pay you without setting up a company. Change the overlap hours to what you will actually keep, and replace the result with your own. If nothing has happened at the company lately, wait until something does; a new round, a launch or a fresh hire gives the note its first line.

Two lists for a remote-from-India search: India-open postings and US founders

Make two lists. First, posted roles: scan YC’s remote role pages and Wellfound’s India page, keep only those whose location line includes India or “Everywhere”, and apply. Second, founders: take ten US startups that raised or launched recently, from funding news or Backdoor’s free YC list, and write each founder a note like the one above. Set up a YC profile that says where you are and how you can be paid.

If your search is mostly in India rather than remote, startups hiring in Bangalore is the place to go next, and the addresses themselves are tracked down in finding a founder’s email.

FAQ

Remote jobs for indians us startups

They exist, but they are a minority of remote startup roles: on 14 October 2026, 17 of the 27 remote software roles on YC's jobs site were marked "Remote (US)" and 2 named India. Search YC's remote role pages, Wellfound's India listings marked "Remote only • India" or "Everywhere", and Hacker News' monthly "Who is hiring?" thread, and read every location line. Writing to founders at US startups directly, with your time-zone overlap stated up front, reaches companies that have not posted yet.

Us startups that hire remote from india

On 14 October 2026, WarpBuild, a YC company listed in San Francisco, had two roles marked "IN / Remote (IN)" with rupee pay bands, and Oscilar had a Java backend role located "Remote - India" on its job board. WarpBuild's second India role, Chief of Staff to the CEO, carried the same "IN / Remote (IN)" tag. Postings change weekly, so check each company's live page before you apply.
