This review is built from Backdoor’s own pages, terms, privacy policy and changelog, read on 14 October 2026, and from our Backdoor profile, where each claim is labelled and dated. We have not run a hands-on test, so nothing here describes our own results. Where a figure comes from Backdoor, the sentence says so.

Backdoor at backdoorai.app is unrelated to backdoorjobs.ai and to getbackdoor.com. If you searched “backdoor ai” and landed on one of those, this page is not about them.

What is Backdoor AI?

Backdoor is an AI job agent that writes to startup founders for you. You talk to it by text, over iMessage or, since July 2026, WhatsApp, and it keeps a web dashboard of every lead, draft and reply.

Its own description of who it is for is narrow: “Anyone aiming for a pre-seed to Series C startup, where one good email to a founder can become an interview. If you want to mass-apply to big companies, it isn’t for you.” That sentence is the most useful thing to know before anything else on this page, because almost every “is it worth it” answer comes back to it.

How does Backdoor work, step by step?

The workflow has six steps, and only one of them needs you.

  1. You tell it about yourself. “Send your LinkedIn, resume or a voice note. Backdoor researches your background and asks what you want next.”
  2. It finds startups each morning. Its homepage says it searches “Y Combinator, Product Hunt, TechCrunch, Crunchbase, Wellfound, GitHub, funding news, careers pages and literally the rest of the internet for startups that just raised, launched or started hiring.”
  3. It finds the founder and drafts a note. “It finds the founder’s email and drafts a note about why you fit them.” Since version 2.0.0 (3 October 2026), each draft also says where the address was found.
  4. You approve, edit or skip. This is your step. The FAQ answers “Will it send emails without asking me?” with “No. Every new email waits for your SEND.”
  5. It sends from your Gmail and follows up. Whatever you approve is sent as you, from your own account. The research page gives the cadence: three follow-ups inside that thread, days apart, ending at the first reply.
  6. It tells you when a founder replies. A text arrives, the reply itself sits in your Gmail, and the nudges stop.

A second route runs alongside this one and costs nothing. Backdoor describes its partner startups as “hand-picked and backed by top-tier VCs”, and it introduces you to the founder when one of them needs someone with your profile.

Is Backdoor AI legit?

Yes, as far as anything checkable goes. “Legit” really asks three things: is it a real product, will it do something with your email you did not agree to, and are the prices what they say. Each has an answer you can check yourself rather than take from a review.

Claims about Backdoor and how to check each one yourself (as of 14 October 2026)
QuestionWhat Backdoor’s pages sayHow to check it yourself
Is it a live product?A changelog with 20 dated releases, from “Backdoor is live” on 22 April 2026 to version 2.0.0 on 3 October 2026Open the changelog; text it and see whether matches arrive
Will it email anyone without asking?“Every new email waits for your SEND.” Follow-ups “only continue threads you approved”Your first draft arrives with send, edit or skip options; nothing appears in your Sent folder until you say send
Whose address do emails come from?Yours: the Gmail account you connect sends each approved emailLook in your Gmail Sent folder after the first send
What happens to my Gmail data? The privacy policy says it keeps a copy of your recent mail (up to your 1,000 most recent messages when you connect, plus the messages it reads afterwards while checking for replies), without attachment contents, deletes that copy when you disconnect Gmail, and follows Google’s Limited Use requirementsRead the privacy policy before connecting; Gmail is optional
Can I leave?Delete your account from Settings; the privacy policy says deletion also revokes Gmail access, and the changelog says deleting cancels your planSettings, then Danger zone, then Delete account
Will it renew and charge me again? In India, outreach is “paid once and never renewed”; outside India, subscriptions renew until cancelledThe plan and currency are shown at checkout
Does it guarantee a job?“No, nothing can.” The terms say it is “not a recruiting agency, an employment agency, or a job placement service”Nothing to check; any tool that promises a job is the one to doubt

A few details in its policies are worth knowing before you connect anything. The privacy policy says Backdoor is based in the United States, that payments go through Dodo Payments, and that Google API calls are made through Composio, “which holds the Google authorization for us”. The terms say you must be 18 or older, and that fees are “generally non-refundable” except where the law requires or Backdoor says otherwise in writing.

The approval step is the main safeguard. Every new email carries your name, goes from your account and waits for your SEND; follow-ups only continue threads you approved, and you can cancel them anytime.

What is free, and what does Backdoor cost?

Most of Backdoor costs nothing. You pay only when you want it to email founders for you.

Free: the daily shortlist of startups, the read on your background, help with your resume, and partner-startup intros. Its pricing section puts it as “Discovery, research, your resume and introductions to our partner startups are all free. You only pay for active outreach.” Since July, it also shows you matching startups and a sample email before you sign up. Separately, anyone can get a Google Sheet that Backdoor describes as covering 2,000+ hirers at more than 320 companies, “mostly startups in India”, without signing up.

Paid, in India: outreach is a one-time pass. These are the prices from its homepage and terms, with the per-day cost worked out:

Backdoor outreach passes in India, checked 14 October 2026
PassPrice, one-timePer dayRenews?
7 days₹999about ₹143No
30 days₹1,599about ₹53No
90 days₹1,799about ₹20No

The terms add three details that matter for the math. Each plan sends “up to 10 new outreach emails a day, or up to 20 on request”, and follow-ups do not count toward that. A pass bought while another is running adds its days to it. And a 30 or 90-day pass “that sends 50 first outreach emails and receives no reply from a founder is extended by 30 days once, at no charge.”

Paid, outside India: the terms describe a subscription instead: new subscribers can start with a 7-day paid trial for USD $1 (subject to eligibility; returning customers may be charged the full price at once), then a plan that “renews automatically at USD $29 per month or $59 every 3 months, with quarterly selected by default”, or a one-time lifetime plan for USD $149 with no renewal. If you take the trial, put the renewal date in your calendar.

Is Backdoor AI worth it?

That turns on who you need to reach. Four readers, four answers, with the cost math where it applies.

Worth the pass: your targets are pre-seed to Series C teams

At a pre-seed to Series C startup, the founder often makes the hiring call and may hire before posting a role. This is the case Backdoor is built for. In India, a full 7-day pass at 10 new emails a day is up to 70 first emails to founders for ₹999, about ₹14 each, with the follow-ups on top. On a 90-day pass the daily cost falls to about ₹20, and you are still the one approving every first email.

The real comparison is with doing it by hand: watching funding and launch news, finding each founder’s address, writing, sending and remembering the follow-ups. If you would actually keep that up for a month, you do not need to pay. If you have tried and stopped after a week, the pass pays for the part you stopped doing. Backdoor says “4 in 10 founder replies came after a follow-up”; if that holds for you, the follow-up is the step a manual search most often drops.

Start on the free tier if you are unsure the matches fit

Take the free matches and the sample email first, and see whether the startups it picks are ones you would actually join. Ask for partner intros. If the matches look right, a 7-day pass is a cheap test in India: ₹999, and nothing renews. Outside India, the USD $1 trial is the equivalent test, but it rolls into a paid plan unless you cancel. If you would rather send a few notes yourself first, our comparison of tools that email founders includes the by-hand version of the same workflow.

Not worth it for a volume search of posted roles

If most of your target companies are large and hire through recruiters, a founder email often ends up with the same recruiting team you would have reached by applying. Backdoor says it isn’t for mass-applying, and we found no mention of auto-apply on its pages. For that search, LoopCV applies automatically and its free plan does so up to a monthly cap, and Jobright offers an agent that applies for you, with its features free to use and daily limits on some. For the trade-off between the two routes, see auto-apply tools vs founder outreach.

Writing to recruiters instead? Look at Simplify

Backdoor writes to founders; we found no mention on its pages of contacting recruiters or hiring managers. If you apply to posted roles and want to write to the recruiter on each, Simplify drafts that email on its paid Simplify+ plan, and you send it from your connected Gmail. Alternatives for startup outreach covers how it pairs with Backdoor.

What are Backdoor’s limits?

These come from its own pages and our profile, and they are the honest reasons to hold off.

  • Outreach is paid. Everything up to the sending is free; the sending is not.
  • It is built around founders. We found no mention of recruiter or hiring-manager outreach, or of applying to posted roles for you.
  • The free hiring list is mostly India. Backdoor says so itself. If you are searching in the US or Europe, the list will help less, though outreach itself is sold outside India too, in dollars.
  • Outside India, it renews. The USD $1 trial rolls into a plan that renews automatically at USD $29 a month or $59 every 3 months unless you cancel; only the USD $149 lifetime plan does not renew.
  • It works by text. You need iMessage or WhatsApp, and a Gmail account if you want it to send for you. Gmail is optional; Backdoor says it is what “sends your emails and catches the replies”.
  • No guarantee, and refunds are limited. “No, nothing can,” on guarantees, and fees are generally non-refundable under its terms.
  • The send cap. Up to 10 new emails a day, or 20 on request, which is plenty for careful outreach and too few for a volume strategy.

What does Backdoor say about its own results?

Backdoor publishes several figures. They are its own numbers, from its own users, and we have no way to check them, so read them as claims:

  • Backdoor says it has “20,000+ happy users” and is “Rated 4.7 out of 5”.
  • Backdoor says “9 in 10 people who heard back through Backdoor got their first founder reply within two weeks”.
  • Backdoor reports that “More than half the people who gave Backdoor three weeks heard back from a founder”, from users who emailed a founder between May and September 2026.

The figure that tells you most is your own. Once you are running, its dashboard and chat show how many emails went out and how many founders replied, and that number after two or three weeks is the one to decide on.

For every claim on this page with its source and check date, see the Backdoor profile.

How to try Backdoor without paying, in five steps

  1. Text Backdoor and send your LinkedIn or resume. Say plainly what you want: role, stage, location, remote or not.
  2. Look at a week of free matches. Would you join these companies? If not, tell it what to change.
  3. Read the sample email. If it sounds like you after one edit, the drafting will save you time.
  4. Get the free hiring list if you are searching in India, and send three notes by hand to see how it goes.
  5. Only then decide on a pass, and pick the length you will actually use.

To weigh the free tier against other free plans, see free AI job-search tools. To do the address hunt yourself instead, finding a founder’s email by hand takes it step by step.

FAQ

Backdoor ai review

Backdoor is an AI job agent you text over iMessage or WhatsApp. Every morning it shortlists startups that fit you from funding, launch and hiring news, then looks up each founder's address and writes a draft; only the drafts you approve are sent, from your own Gmail, with follow-ups kept in that thread. The startup matches, the read on your background, resume help and partner intros are free; you pay only when it sends.

Backdoorai legit

Yes, on every point you can check yourself: it is a live product with a dated changelog going back to April 2026, published prices and terms, a privacy policy that says Gmail access follows Google's Limited Use rules, and an account deletion button that also revokes Gmail access. Nothing is sent without your approval, and emails go from your own Gmail, so you can see every one in your Sent folder. Its results figures are its own and are not audited, so treat them as Backdoor's claims.

Is backdoor ai worth it

It depends on who you want to reach. If you are aiming at pre-seed to Series C startups, a 7-day pass in India is a one-time ₹999 for up to 10 new founder emails a day, which works out to about ₹14 per first email if you use the full week. If you mostly want to apply to posted roles at large companies, an auto-apply tool or a tracker fits better, and Backdoor says so itself.
